In March of 2002 I noticed an old Airstream Trailer that
had been towed into our rural
Michigan neighborhood and left for dead
behind a house. As I drove by I knew instantly
that I would soon
be the owner
of this junked trailer. I approached the young
couple who owned the camper and offered them $400.00 buying
nearly sight unseen. I found out that they had just spent the last
year living in the 22" Safari trailer in the back yard of a relative.
They showed me how they had heated the thing with a propane tank inside
and how they even had cable for their TV at one point.
To
my delight, the hard rubber tires were good and she towed like a dream.
I then began ripping out the flooring and cleaning everything in sight. To
my surprise much had been left original and the refurbishment went well.
The fridge even worked. It wasn't long before the Safari had a new black
and white checked floor, curtains, white and grey paint and upholstery.
The hard part as many Airstreamers know is buffing the exterior. I still
have more to do on that- it is endless!.
The plot thickens and the story continues... in 2002 being a stay at home
mom I was selling vintage fabrics on Ebay for extra cash. I am also a working
artist and so I was making sketches of my Safari and how I would like the
landscaping to look when I was hit with a brainstorm. I listed an Airstream watercolor painting and the dam broke.
I have sold over 300 Airstream paintings since May of 2002. I have painted commissoned
pieces for people all over the U.S. and Canada and our Grand Rapids Airstream dealership owns
a painting. I have met so many great people because of my artwork and my Safari. Thank you!
I rescued the little trailer and look what it gave me in return. Keep
an eye out for us in the state parks around Michigan, you can't miss us!
